Synopsis

THE ENDURING MYTH THAT MAKES US HUMAN What makes a hero? Who better to answer that question than Lee Child… ‘It’s Lee Child. Why would you not read it?’ Karin Slaughter ‘I don't know another author so skilled at making me turn the page’ In his first work of nonfiction, the creator of the multimillion-selling Jack Reacher series explores the endurance of heroes from Achilles to Bond, showing us how this age-old myth is a fundamental part of what makes us human. He demonstrates how hero stories continue to shape our world – arguing that we need them now more than ever. From the Stone Age to the Greek Tragedies, from Shakespeare to Robin Hood, we have always had our heroes. The hero is at the centre of formative myths in every culture and persists to this day in world-conquering books, films and TV shows. But why do these characters continue to inspire us, and why are they so central to storytelling? Scalpel-sharp on the roots of storytelling and enlightening on the history and science of myth, is essential reading for anyone trying to write or understand fiction. Child teaches us how these stories still shape our minds and behaviour in an increasingly confusing modern world, and with his trademark concision and wit, demonstrates that however civilised we get, we’ll always need heroes.

About Lee Child

English Author Jim Grant (Pen Name) “Lee Child”, was born in 1954 in Coventry, England UK. His most notable writings are the Jack Reacher series novels. Beginning with his first novel, Killing Floor, each of his work follows a former American military policeman, Jack Reacher who wanders throughout the United States.

Grant (Child) studied law at the University of Sheffield, but knew he had no intention of practicing law. After graduating, he worked in commercial television. He worked in that venue until 1995. A fun fact is that he chose Reacher for his main characters name, because he himself is tall and his wife once said, “If this “writing thing” does not work out, you could always be a Reacher in a supermarket.” Grant (Child) describes his books as revenge stories-“somebody does a very bad thing, and Reacher takes revenge.” In 2012, his novel “One Shot”, was adapted into a film called “Jack Reacher”, starring Tom Cruise.

Reviews

Goodreads review by Khurram

The hero trap I am a bit disappointed and dissatisfied with this book. I will be the first to admit I bought this because it was written by Lee Childs. It is probably my own fault for not finding out what the book was about. The first half of the book is about the progression of language and creating......more

Goodreads review by Bruce

The creator of, possibly, the most unique modern example of this enduring character, takes a look at the possible genesis and evolution of the mythology centered around the hero. The opening sentence is delightfully quirky - “Let’s start with opium”. In many ways the entire first chapter is typical o......more

He is to crime fiction what Clint Eastwood's 'man with no name' was to the western. Lee Child's genius has been to create a tough guy hero that men will envy and women will adore’
