Synopsis

It’s the summer of 1962, and Scott and his friends spend their days playing baseball and thinking about girls. But the threat of nuclear war looms over everything they do, and they are haunted by the idea that they could all be dead tomorrow.Even though the possibility of war is all anyone talks about, Scott’s dad is the only one in the neighborhood who actually prepares for the worst, building a bomb shelter to protect his family and stocking it with enough supplies to keep them alive for two critical weeks. The neighbors scoff, but then, in the middle of the night in late October, the unthinkable happens. Suddenly ten people are crammed into a shelter built for four. Ten people eating the food meant for four, breathing the air meant for four. Ten people struggling to survive—but what will await them when they eventually emerge?Internationally bestselling author Todd Strasser has written his most impressive and personal novel to date, painstakingly yet sensitively exploring the terrifying what-ifs of one of the most explosive moments in history.

About Todd Strasser

Todd Strasser is the internationally bestselling author of numerous books for children and teens, most notably the classics The Wave and Give a Boy a Gun, which are taught in classrooms around the world. While many of his novels are based on or inspired by events in his own life, Fallout — his 100th original novel — is an especially personal story. “We were indeed the only ones in the neighborhood with a bomb shelter,” he says. “This novel can be read as a memoir, both of what happened during that time and of what I feared would happen.” Todd Strasser lives in New York.

4 1/2 stars, actually. I challenge any reluctant reader to be able to put this book down! But I would be cautious about which kids I recommend this book to. Besides the horror of the bomb actually being dropped, there is some other content involving Playboy, kids drinking wine, etc. I thoroughly enj......more

I read this one during my summer internship. It seemed like a short read that wouldn't be too heavy, and Fallout was just that! I loved the premise. The Plot is set in 1962, where there is a huge risk of nuclear war. Scott's dad, Richard, is the only one in the neighborhood who builds a bomb shelter.......more

It's 1962, the height of the Cold War, only in this alternative version of history, atom bombs actually go off. Eleven-year old Scott and his family seek safety in a home-made bomb shelter. Others, their neighbors without shelters of their own, try to get in. There's only enough emergency supplies f......more
