About William Steig

William Steig (1907-2003) was a cartoonist, illustrator and author of award-winning books for children, including Shrek!, on which the DreamWorks movies are based. Steig was born in New York City. Every member of his family was involved in the arts, and so it was no surprise when he decided to become an artist. He attended City College and the National Academy of Design. In 1930, Steig’s work began appearing in The New Yorker, where his drawings have been a popular fixture ever since. He published his first children's book, Roland the Minstrel Pig, in 1968. In 1970, Steig received the Caldecott Medal for Sylvester and the Magic Pebble. His books for children also include Dominic; The Real Thief; The Amazing Bone, a Caldecott Honor Book; Amos & Boris, a National Book Award finalist; and Abel's Island and Doctor De Soto, both Newbery Honor Books. Steig's books have also received the Christopher Award, the Irma Simonton Black Award, the William Allen White Children's Book Award, and the American Book Award. His European awards include the Premio di Letteratura per l'infanzia (Italy), the Silver Pencil Award (the Netherlands), and the Prix de la Fondation de France. On the basis of his entire body of work, Steig was selected as the 1982 U.S. candidate for the Hans Christian Andersen Medal for Illustration and subsequently as the 1988 U.S. candidate for Writing. Steig also published thirteen collections of drawings for adults, beginning with About People in 1939, and including The Lonely Ones, Male/Female, The Agony in the Kindergarten, and Our Miserable Life. He died in Boston at the age of 95.

1983 Newbery Honor Book (for Doctor De Soto) This is a collection of some of Steig's most popular books. Shrek! This is the picture book that the movie was loosely based upon. Some of the characters are there like the donkey and the dragon and, of course, an ugly princess, but the movie definitely exp......more

I listened to this audiobook with my son. However, we do own the paper copy and had not read it! I knew the version of Shrek from the animated movies, and was a bit surprised to find this book much darker. (Although, perhaps, I should not be surprised, many fairy tales are quite dark!) The book cont......more

We listened to this on Hoopla audio, which was a lovely recording. I'm sure the illustrations would be fun, but as much as I liked Abel's Island by Steig, I didn't love this. Several of the stories were a little too odd for my taste, and I didn't enjoy it nearly as much as I'd like.......more

Audiobook Tales unique, inventive and wise without being patronizing read by Meryl Streep and Stanley Tucci. William Steig is so good that I wish I had discovered him earlier but I’m glad that although I’m 45 years old I didn’t miss out.......more

Quotes

“Since one of the great pleasures of Steig's books is the language he uses, it's a particular delight to have the recording of The One and Only Shrek! Plus Five Other Stories read by Meryl Streep and Stanley Tucci. You can really hear that the brilliance of 'Shrek' lies in the language Steig uses...one of the most delightful moments is when Shrek accosts a peasant, who is busy 'singing and scything,' and Tucci snarls Shrek's greeting: 'You there, varlet, why so blithe?' Shrek then robs the yokel of his lunch: 'Pheasant, peasant? What a pleasant present!'” —Los Angeles Times

“Listeners will surely hear the glee dripping from the full-bodied, though never over-the-top, performances by Streep and Tucci.” —Publishers Weekly (starred review)

“I did, I admit, compare my narrative abilities to those of Tucci and Streep...And yes, they were better. What did you expect? But what great material they had to work with.” —Malcolm Jones, Newsweek

“Since one of the great pleasures of Steig's books is the language he uses, it's a particular delight to have the recording of "The One and Only Shrek! Plus Five Other Stories" read by Meryl Streep and Stanley Tucci. You can really hear that the brilliance of "Shrek" lies in the language Steig uses rather than in the slender story. The ogre's extreme repulsiveness gives Steig plenty of opportunity to trot out a vile vocabulary, but one of the most delightful moments is when Shrek accosts a peasant, who is busy "singing and scything," and Tucci snarls Shrek's greeting: "You there, varlet, why so blithe?" Shrek then robs the yokel of his lunch: "Pheasant, peasant? What a pleasant present!” —The Los Angeles Times

“Both actors give masterful performances.” —Booklist

“If you haven't already experienced the real, Steig version of Shrek!, here's a chance to do so...This compilation makes entertaining listening for the whole family. Streep in particular reads with great flexibility and warmth of expression.” —TheStar.com

“If you're among Steig's many adult fans, you won't want to miss this.” —Cookie Magazine

“What better way to learn the original story of Shrek than by listening to it on this unabridged recording...Meryl Streep is her best while reading Brave Irene...And let's not forget Mr. Tucci. He brilliantly interprets the stories and interjects energy and a light-hearted touch to all he reads.” —TeensReadToo.com
