Synopsis

William Collins Books and Decca Records are proud to present ARGO Classics, a historic catalogue of classic prose and verse read by some of the world’s most renowned voices. Originally released as vinyl records, these expertly remastered stories are now available to download for the first time. ‘Though I am not naturally honest, I am sometimes so by chance.’ Based on Robert Greene’s story Pandosto, play tells the story of Leontes, king of Sicilia, and his childhood friend, Polixenes, king of Bohemia. In a jealous rage, Leontes mistakenly accuses Polixenes and his own his wife, Hermione, of adultery and her newborn daughter as illegitimate, casting her into the wilderness, causing their son to die of grief and Hermione to seemingly follow suit. With his family dead or believed dead, Leontes must face the tragic consequences of his actions. With unbridled honesty and the pain of love, the final act is one of Shakespeare’s most moving reconciliation scenes. All of the Shakespeare plays within the ARGO Classics catalogue are performed by the Marlowe Dramatic Society and Professional Players. The Marlowe was founded in 1907 with a mission to focus on effective delivery of verse, respect the integrity of texts, and rescue neglected plays by Shakespeare’s contemporaries and the less performed plays of Shakespeare himself. The Marlowe has performed annually at Cambridge Arts Theatre since its opening in 1936 and continues to produce some of the finest actors of their generations. Thurston Dart, Professor of Music at London University and a Fellow of Jesus College Cambridge, directed the music for this production. The full cast includes: William Squire; Denis McCarthy; Terrence Hardiman; Corin Redgrave; Toby Robertson; Anthony White; George Rylands; John Barton; Michael Bates; Margaretta Scott; Mary Conroy; Joan Hart; Jill Daltry; Janette Richer; Clive Swift; Ian McKellen; Richard Marquand; Donald Beves; Anthony Arlidge.

About William Shakespeare

William Shakespeare was born in April 1564 in the town of Stratford-upon-Avon, on England’s Avon River. When he was eighteen, he married Anne Hathaway. The couple had three children—an older daughter Susanna and twins, Judith and Hamnet. Hamnet, Shakespeare’s only son, died in childhood. The bulk of Shakespeare’s working life was spent in the theater world of London, where he established himself professionally by the early 1590s. He enjoyed success not only as a playwright and poet, but also as an actor and shareholder in an acting company. Although some think that sometime between 1610 and 1613 Shakespeare retired from the theater and returned home to Stratford, where he died in 1616, others believe that he may have continued to work in London until close to his death.

Going to start saying “Exit pursued by bear” every time I leave a room so if you never see me again you’ll always wonder… This is a delightfully bonkers little tale of the late Shakespeare era and forgiveness becomes a large and lovely theme. Which like, this is quite the act of forgiveness as Leonte......more

A masterpiece, demonstrating how grace redeems and love restores over time. This play features one of Shakespeare's most interesting psychological studies (Leontes) and two of his most charming heroines (Hermione and Perdita). Shakespeare's art has deepened to the point where he can deliberately cho......more

A winter of the heart descends upon a weak-minded king, setting in motion a sequence of potentially tragic events that unfold against a fantastical background. Such is the tableau that unfolds for the reader in William Shakespeare’s The Winter’s Tale. The Winter's Tale was composed late in Shakespear......more

"Exit, pursued by a bear" is the most famous stage direction in literature. It comes here in Winter's Tale, at the end of Act III, and it's famous because it's funny. And the really funny thing is it's been a hella dark play until this moment. What happened is King Leontes has become suddenly and ir......more
