William Pene du Bois (1916 - 1993) won the 1948 Newbery Medal for The Twenty-One Balloons and received two Caldecott Honors for his illustrations for Bear Party and Lion. He illustrated books by Rumer Godden, Charlotte Zolotow, and others.

3.7⭐ Read this, oh so long ago. I still remember odd bits and pieces, especially the balloon house ( the inspiration for Disney's UP!, I've long speculated) and the escape from Krakatowa. Loved this as a kid.......more

I was not anticipating loving this book as much as I did! It reads like a classic, is lighthearted and entirely fun!
