A poor student of metaphysics becomes obsessed with the odd music of an elderly German viol player who lives in the same boarding house on the mysteriously mysterious Rue d'Auseil - a street that no one else has ever heard of, and which the man is never able to find again later in his life. Unfortunately for both our narrator and the elderly musician someone (or something) else is also obsessed with The Music of Erich Zann.
