The Expedition of Humphry Clinker

What if a journey across Britain could expose every vanity, folly, tenderness, and contradiction of human nature?

In *The Expedition of Humphry Clinker*, Tobias Smollett offers one of the great comic travel novels of the eighteenth century. Published in 1771, the novel follows a traveling household through Britain, using letters from multiple characters to turn the road itself into a stage of satire, misunderstanding, affection, and social observation.

This is a novel of movement and many voices: the irritable yet humane Matthew Bramble, his sister Tabitha, the younger travelers Lydia and Jeremy, the lively servant Winifred Jenkins, and the enigmatic Humphry Clinker himself. Through their letters, the same journey becomes many different stories—comic, sentimental, critical, romantic, and absurd.

Smollett’s genius lies in his ability to make travel reveal character. Inns, towns, roads, fashionable resorts, social rituals, medical complaints, class tensions, and family quarrels become material for sharp humor and humane insight. The result is both a lively picaresque adventure and a richly textured portrait of eighteenth-century British life.

Its enduring appeal comes from its freshness: the comedy of manners, the shifting perspectives, the satirical energy, and the pleasure of hearing a society reveal itself while on the move.

This AI-narrated audiobook offers a clear, polished, and immersive listening experience, helping modern listeners follow Smollett’s wit, correspondence structure, character voices, and period detail with ease.

Join the expedition, open the letters, and rediscover a classic journey where every mile brings another revelation.
