The Cauld Lad of Hilton

The Cauld Lad of Hilton tale is based on the English legend of 16th century about the groom-boy named Robert Skelton who was murdered. According to one version, he was killed for a love relationship with the lord’s daughter. According to another – he forgot to prepare the horses for the long way, and the Baron got angry, killed him and hid the body. Anyway, a ghost or a brownie, sort of Bogle, has begun to appear in the Hilton castle at night. While the servants were asleep, he made a mess in the kitchen and spoiled clothes and dishes. However when servants left the cake for him, he helped clear away things for them, and made everything tidy.
