Synopsis

Em-bar-rass-ment means something you do or say that makes you wish you were someone else.

Nina Soni is a problem solver—and her latest problem is her little sister Kavita, who is a real embarrassment. Not only does Kavita sing too much, she often gets the lyrics wrong or, even worse, makes up ridiculous songs. What Nina needs is a project—a plan to fix her sister.

But one project isn’t really enough, especially during a long rainy school break.

Nina is restless. A pile of dirt in the neighbor’s yard is a temptation she can’t resist—a project for Nina, a distraction for Kavita, and something to do to pass the time. Soon, Nina has more to worry about than Kavita’s singing. Can she fix Kavita and her own mistake before it’s too late?

I was super duper excited to receive this book because I grew up deprived of South Asian characters in middle grade books. Readers are first introduced to Nina, a slightly forgetful nine year old, in “Nina Soni: Former Best Friend.” I was drawn to Nina because she is so organized; she loves to make lists! In this second adventure, Nina is having problems with her six-year-old sister, Kavita. Kavita is e-m-b-a-r-r-a-s-s-i......more

Which kid wants to be preached to? Nina Soni reads like a story they would have forced us to read in my elementary school's Moral Ed class. Nina's world has interesting enough characters, representation is great, and the premise is fun (fix an embarrassing sister!) But the writing is stilted, and the......more

This children's book has 4th grader, Nina, planning to stop her younger sister, Kavita, from spontaneously singing made up songs that are embarrassing to Nina. Nina likes to make lists and to include definitions of bigger words that she uses. One of the adventures that Nina and Kavita engage in is c......more
