Synopsis

In September 1925, Scotland Yard DCI Alec Fletcher inherits a large house on the outskirts of London from a recently deceased great-uncle. Fortunately so, as he and his wife, the Honorable Daisy Dalrymple Fletcher, are the recent proud parents of twins, and their house is practically bursting at the seams. Though in need of a bit of work, this new, larger house seems a godsend—set in a small circle of houses, with a communal garden and Hampstead Heath nearby, the setting is idyllic.Idyllic, that is until a dead body shows up half-hidden under the bushes of the communal garden. Now rumors of bootleggers, American gangsters, and an international liquor smuggling operation via black ships have turned everything in their new neighborhood upside down. Alec is assigned by Scotland Yard to ferret out the truth behind the dastardly dead—but it’s up to Daisy to find out who the dead man is, what his relationship to her new neighbors is, why he was murdered, and who did him in!

"Heavens, darling, you are becoming positively domesticated." Spot on, Marge! Our dear little Daisy Dalrymple is getting boring! She used to be a well mannered upperclass rebel, finding her own path, getting a job (oh, dearie, dearie me!), surviving on eggs and sardines and choosing the wrong partner,......more

It was interesting seeing some of the effects of the Volstead Act from the English point of view. I'm not positive that the attitudes & machinations that took place in this novel were representative, but they sure rang true. That made this otherwise typical DD cozy mystery a bit more interesting. I normally love the Daisy Dalrymple series but I found this silly story of bootleggers smuggling rum during Prohibition a real disappointment. And I thought the identity of the murderer was quite obvious too. A let down in what's otherwise been a great series of cosy mysteries.......more

Quotes

“Dunn creates a vivid portrait of the rapidly changing way of life in 1920s England…Entertaining and well researched.”

RT Book Reviews

“Dunn provides an intriguing view of the Prohibition era from the English perspective, besides casting a witty light on the social changes of the day.”

Publishers Weekly

“Daisy Dalrymple…is infamous at Scotland Yard as the detective’s wife who keeps falling over bodies. Technically, Daisy doesn’t stumble over this body, but her dog and parlor maid do…As usual, Daisy helps solve the case because people ‘do like to tell me things, you know.’"

Booklist

“A sleuthing couple who move to a new home suspect their new neighbors of murder…Ever-curious Daisy adds an interesting take on Prohibition to her modest mystery.”
