Synopsis

What can birds teach us about growing, finding food, making homes, and God? In Behold The Fowls of the Air, children meet birds from chickadees and gulls to larks, swallows, robins, sparrows, eagles, and ravens. These stories by Edith M. Patch, Lenore Elizabeth Mulets, and Mary Graham Bonner combine lively bird adventures with observations about the natural world and God’s care for his creatures. This collection brings classic bird stories, nature learning, poetry, and Scripture together for young listeners and families and school children. The collection also includes Bert Nichols Stauff’s adaptation of Shakespeare’s “Hark, hark, the lark,” and Cecil Frances Alexander’s “All Things Bright and Beautiful.” Story-based lessons invite children to think about what they heard, while gentle Bible applications include Matthew 6:26 from the World English Bible.

About Edith M. Patch

Edith M. Patch (1876–1954) was an American entomologist and children’s author. Her writing introduced young readers to the natural world through close observation of living things. Bird Stories presents bird characters alongside natural-history details. Lenore Elizabeth Mulets (born 1876) was a children’s nature writer. Her Stories of Birds combines stories, poems, songs, and information about familiar birds for young readers. Mary Graham Bonner (1890–1974) was an American children’s author. Her many books for young readers included bedtime stories and imaginative tales about birds and other animals. Daddy’s Bedtime Bird Stories was published in 1917. William Shakespeare (1564–1616) was an English poet and playwright. “Hark, hark, the lark” appears as a song in Cymbeline. Cecil Frances Alexander (1818–1895) was an Irish poet and hymn writer. “All Things Bright and Beautiful” was first published in Hymns for Little Children. Matthew 6:26 is from the World English Bible (WEB).

About William Shakespeare

William Shakespeare (1564–1616), English poet and dramatist of the Elizabethan and early Jacobean period, is the most widely known author in all of English literature and often considered the greatest. He was an active member of a theater company for at least twenty years, during which time he wrote many great plays. Plays were not prized as literature at the time and Shakespeare was not widely read until the middle of the eighteenth century, when a great upsurge of interest in his works began that continues today.
