Synopsis

Charles Colcock Jones, Sr. (1804 –1863) was a Presbyterian clergyman, educator, missionary, and planter of Liberty County, Georgia. Jones’s book ‘The Religious Instruction of the Negroes in the United States’ (1842) is an extended plea to white ministers and slaveowners to attend to the spiritual needs of slaves and free blacks. Part One provides a history of slavery and religion in the United States from 1620 to 1842. Part Two discusses the moral and religious conditions of slaves and free blacks, while Part Three calls on the Christian church to address these conditions. Jones concludes in Part Four with pleas to slave-owners, ministers and the church at large to devote more attention to the religious instruction of African-Americans.

Reviews

Lots of information for those who who have christan faith This book highlights the origin of blacks and their so called certainty in christ.I'm sure most of us will just ignore the fact that we follow the religious views of our slave masters.......more

I can't believe that something this blatant exists, but I'm glad it does. It confirmed the stance I've had all along. The whole thing is fraud.......more

Interesting topic Didn't realize that status quo had such a hard time preaching the gospel to the slaves. It seems as though they were damned if they did and damned if they didn't.......more
