Synopsis

Brent Runyon's account of his attempted suicide has garnered critical accolades for its glimpse into adolescent depression and rare insight into the human condition. Fearing expulsion and parental disapproval after lighting a shirt on fire at his school, Brent goes home, soaks his bathrobe with gasoline, steps into his shower, and strikes a match. Suffering horrific burns, Brent faces a long, painful recovery-both mentally and physically. "Runyon has, perhaps, written the defining book of a new genre, one that gazes ... unflinchingly at boys on the emotional edge."-Booklist, starred review

This book is written in the perspective and language of a fourteen year old boy. I found it redundant and boring, although the story had so much potential. This would be a good read for a younger audience, but is not very insightful for someone over the age of seventeen.

Just doesn't seem teen appropriate for me. Plus I don't think a teenager would be able to understand......more

I enjoyed this book a lot, it was written as though you were inside the mind of Brent, battling these dark thoughts and trying to figure himself out. The book is raw and honest, not leaving anything out. It started tragically but ended beautifully. I really enjoyed this book.......more

A good book which shows insight into the mind of a teenage male who is battling depression and anxiety. It was very sad to see how helpless and lonely he felt at the time of his suicide attempt. His journey through recovery was interesting and informative. The author's notes at the end of the book p......more
