Synopsis

‘On Liberty’ is an 1859 philosophical treatise by the English philosopher John Stuart Mill (1806 – 1873) which applies an ethical system of utilitarianism to society and the state. Mill starts with a brief overview of the meaning of liberty and proffers his basic argument in favor of liberty for the individual, to the degree that it harms no one else. The value of liberty of opinion and liberty of action are set forth in two chapters. Emphasizing the importance of individuality versus the "tyranny of the majority," he highlights the positive effects of liberty on all people and on society, as freedom enables progress and prevents social stagnation. Expounding on society, Mills discusses the appropriate level of authority that society ought to have over the individual and the obligation of that society to protect people who are incapable of exercising their own liberty. Finally, he offers particular examples and applications of his theory, in order to clarify the meaning of his claims.

About John Stuart Mill

John Stuart Mill (1806-1873) was a British political philosopher who wrote on such subjects as logic, economics, ethics, metaphysics, religion, and current affairs. His best-known works include On Liberty, Utilitarianism, The Subjection of Women, A System of Logic, Principles of Political Economy, and his autobiography. He was born in London, the eldest son of the Scottish philosopher, historian, and economist James Mill and educated by his father with the assistance of utilitarian philosopher Jeremy Bentham. Mill's philosophy draws upon empiricism and utilitarianism while modifying these doctrines to incorporate a greater sense of humanity. A strong defender of freedom of thought and expression and an early supporter of the cause of women's rights, Mill remains a towering figure in the development of political liberalism.

This was a very good philosophical book. It's surprisingly accessible given its genre and time period. There's no question that Mill was ahead of his time, and it shows in both parts of this book. I really would like to read some more of his stuff, but since my to-read list is so long, I need to put......more

Read On Liberty 2 weeks ago and then last week read The Subjection of Women. Who knew that JSM was such a feminist! Written from a place of reason and humility. I'd be interested in learning more about how influential he actually was in terms of policies.......more
