Synopsis

An empowering self-coaching guide to help ADHDers understand, repair, and build healthy relationships – with friends, romantic partners, family, and at work – from ADHD coach Kristen Carder, creator of the I Have ADHD podcast.

The demands of relationships on the ADHD brain are taxing. You’re a good person who wants to do right by people, but it seems that no matter how much you contort yourself, you’re still not enough. And somehow, at the same time you’re too much; too loud, too emotional, too impulsive, too messy, too everything.

In You're Not in Trouble, ADHD coach Kristen Carder dives into the five prominent relationships in our lives: friendships, romantic partnerships, parent-child relationships, family-of-origin relationships, and work relationships. She helps you understand ADHD’s impact on your relationships and gives you simple, practical steps to improve them. Tailored for the ADHD brain, and using a trauma-informed approach, this is a gentle guide to strengthening your connection with others while helping you realize that you are finally enough.

“Carder speaks directly to the generation of adults only now discovering their ADHD and how it has impacted their relationships. With striking honesty about growing up neurodivergent in a world built by and for neurotypicals, she names the grief that surfaces when you finally start telling yourself the truth about what you needed as a kid and didn't get. This is essential reading for any adult with ADHD working to understand themselves and heal their closest relationships.” —Whitney Goodman, LMFT, author of Toxic Positivity

“Kristen Carder names something many adults with ADHD quietly carry: the sense that they are always one misstep away from disappointing someone. You’re Not in Trouble gives readers language for that experience and invites them toward more honest, connected relationships.” —Tamara Rosier, PhD, author of Your Brain’s Not Broken

“If relationships (of all kinds) feel more fraught than they should be, then You're Not in Trouble is the book for you. Readers, especially adults with ADHD, will be able to find, maintain, and savor strong connections and circumvent common difficulties, including sidestepping unhealthy ties. Everything you need is in this book.” —J. Russell Ramsay, PhD, ABPP, psychologist, and author of Once I Get Started and The Adult ADHD Anxiety Workbook
