Synopsis

In her book, subtitled How Women Have Betrayed Women, philosophy professor Christina Sommers has exposed a disturbing development: how a group of zealots, claiming to speak for all women, are promoting a dangerous agenda that threatens cherished ideals and sets women against men in all spheres of life. In case after case, Sommers shows how these extremists have propped up their arguments with highly questionable but wellfunded research, presenting inflammatory and often inaccurate information and stifling any semblance of free and open scrutiny. Trumpeted as orthodoxy, their resulting findings on everything from rape, domestic abuse, and economic bias to the supposed crisis in girls selfesteem perpetuate a view of women as victims of the "patriarchy."

It is perilous even to speak of feminism today if one does not agree with its radical adherents, now populating the opinion pages of The Guardian or Australia's Daily Life with essays claiming that women are universally victims of a male conspiracy known as patriarchy. This is especially so if you a......more
