Synopsis

We've all had those moments. The ones where you look in the mirror and nothing feels ok. For Anita Bhagwandas, this started when she was a child and it created an enduring internal torment about her looks.

We're all told that this is just part of growing up, but it stays with us, evolving as we age. The internet tells us we should love ourselves, whilst bombarding us with images of airbrushed perfection, upholding centuries-old beauty standards which we can't always see. Our beauty rituals are so often based around things we think we need to fix, grow, and develop—sometimes tipping into dangerous obsession.

So, what seismic shift does it take to break free from this mentality? In Ugly, Anita uncovers where these beauty standards started, unpicks why they've been perpetuated, and unmasks the structures that continue to support them. From the ever-growing cosmetic surgery industry, to the hidden pitfalls of "pretty privilege," it is time to finally break free from those limiting beauty standards, because feeling ugly should have nothing to do with how we look, and everything to do with who wants us to feel lacking.

About Anita Bhagwandas

Anita Bhagwandas is Conde Nast Traveller's beauty director and has an obsession with anything historic, from ancient spring baths to kitschy hotels and Googie architecture. She grew up in Wales, but spent many of her childhood holidays at her familial home in South India. Anita is always on a quest to find the ultimate spa, new beauty hotspot, or must-try treatment. She's also the author of UGLY: Giving Us Back our Beauty Standards, which meticulously unpicks modern day beauty myths through history, pop culture, and memoir.

I read some of the reviews of this book and found out how some people are criticizing about the 'writing', 'grammar' or 'repetitiveness. This book is an account of a child's memories of how she was abused, humiliated and rejected. This is a powerful book. The very beauty of biographies is that they......more

Although I expected more, this is a fairly good read, mainly because of who she is, a former barrister, and was one of the first Black female recorders in the UK, and then jailed in 2014. An interesting book. Three stars.......more

This is a beautiful memoir about survival in a life saturated with physical and emotional abuse. Claire's problems seemed to start with her mother's inability to deal with her bed wetting, although the underlying issue truly lies with her mom's mental issues. Claire becomes a punching bag for her mo......more

When I read the book, I was not sure whether I liked it or not. I read some of the reviews and that helped me to make up my own mind. Let me try to show you. I agree with the people who said the book was repetetive. But with every book I read during the last weeks, I had this same thought: Gosh, that......more

Ugly is a story about a girl suffering through abuse. I’m not sure what to make of this. I think it’s kind of unfair to write a review on somebody’s actual life, because I have no say in the events. But I gave this book two stars because I didn’t know the purpose. What was the point of writing this bo......more
