Synopsis

Legendary writer Zane Grey earned legions of devoted fans with his gritty westerns. In To The Last Man, he dramatizes the events of the Pleasant Valley War of Arizona, a bloody feud that nearly wiped two families off the face of the earth. Jean Isbel has settled in Oregon and is growing comfortable with his new home when an urgent letter arrives from his father. Trouble is brewing in Arizona between the Isbel cattlemen and the Jorth clan of sheepmen. Rushing to his father's side, Jean arrives just before the first bullets start flying. But matters are complicated when Jean and Ellen Jorth, daughter of the sheepmen's leader, fall in love. Jean will have to balance his love for Ellen with his duty to family. Grey's depiction of this historical event spares no details in describing the devastation this feud caused. Ed Sala's dramatic narration carries you back to the old West, when gunmen were determined to fight to the last man.

About Zane Grey

The prolific American writer Zane Grey was the pioneer of the Western literary genre. Grey produced well over 100 books, in which he presented the West as a moral battleground, where his characters were either destroyed or redeemed. His semi-outlaw heroes were his most enduring creation. He sold some 17 million books during his lifetime, and an estimated 100 Hollywood Western films have been based on his stories.

Born with the name Pearl Grey in Zanesville, Ohio, in 1872, Zane was the son of a farmer and part-time preacher. His mother was a second-generation Danish Quaker. He graduated from the University of Pennsylvania with a degree in dentistry in 1896 and practiced in New York City until 1904. That year, Grey wrote and self-published his first book, Betty Zane, after it was turned down by several publishers. The colorful frontier story was based on his mother's journal and eventually became a critical success. He married Lina Elise Roth, who encouraged him to become a full-time professional writer.

In 1908, Grey made a journey to the West with Colonel C. J. "Buffalo" Jones, who told him tales of adventure on the plains. This trip turned out to be a turning point in Grey's career. In 1912, Riders of the Purple Sage was published. It sold 2 million copies and was filmed three times. Grey's formula-in which a mysterious outlaw fights to protect the innocent and the good-shows up in many of his novels. In 1918, he moved to Altadena, California, where he lived for the rest of his life. Grey died on October 23, 1939.

Long ago, just two weeks into a marriage that has so far lasted 25 years, I moved to Arizona, settling near Globe. We spent the next four years exploring. One Saturday we drove towards Lake Roosevelt, crossed the Salt River and climbed the Mogollon Rim. (One memory I have of this drive is stopping f......more

I had read this book before, a good long time ago, and, even then, I remember it being problematic in the way that literally every Hollywood western is problematic (sorry, the genre is kind of rotten to the core, I think there are things that could genuinely change that, but, eh, convince me I'm wro......more

Based on the true story of the Pleasant Valley War in Arizona, this novel is both romantic and tragic as two families allow their greed to destroy everything they had worked for. The war took place in Gila County, primarily, from 1882–1892. Zane Grey changed the names of the people involved and fict......more

This would for me be a 3.5 book (ah could we but give half stars). I don't rate it a 4 above as I didn't enjoy/like it as much as I have most to all of the books I rate 4 point... After all beyond that all that's left is a full 5. The book is much more of a romance than I look for. It reminds me tha......more

An adventure/romance set in the wilds of Arizona. A crisis builds between two feuding clans of ranchers and sheep-herders, that began years ago in Texas where the two fractious and antagonistic patriarchs grew up together. The action is non-stop as the tension increases, and the gorgeous natural env......more
