Synopsis

Selected from sermons delivered by C. S. Lewis during World War II, these nine addresses show the beloved author and theologian bringing hope and courage in a time of great doubt. The Weight of Glory, considered by many to be Lewiss finest sermon of all, is an incomparable explication of virtue, goodness, desire, and glory. Also included are: Transposition, On Forgiveness, Why I Am Not a Pacifist, and Learning in WarTime, in which Lewis presents his compassionate vision of Christianity in language that is both lucid and compelling.

About C. S. Lewis

It is a lofty goal, but many would be pleased if the work they accomplished would last well after their death, and be lauded with posthumous praise. Such is what happened to British author Clive Staples Lewis. He was born on November 29, 1898 and passed on November 22, 1963...... just prior to his 65th birthday. It was 2013 on the 50th Anniversary of Lewis' death, that he was honored by being given a memorial in Poet's Corner in West minister Abbey.

Lewis wore many professional hats......that of novelist, poet, academic, medievalist, literary critic, essayist, lay theologian, broadcaster, lecturer, and Christian apologist. His best known work is The Chronicles of Narnia, The Screwtape Letters, and The Space Trilogy. He is the author of more than 30 books, translated into over 30 languages. As we are all aware, The Chronicles of Narnia had tremendous sales numbers and have been made popular on stage, TV, radio, and cinema.

Lewis married American author, Joy Davidman, in 1956, but sadly, she passed away only four years later from cancer at only 45 years old. Lewis then died in 1963 of renal failure.

He has a way of getting to the heart of things that is unlike any other. The last few essays really hit me hard, and I love him for that. Will always......more

"The negative idea of Unselfishness carries with it the suggestion not primarily of securing good things for others, but of going without them ourselves, as if our abstinence and not their happiness was the important point." I have 44 highlights in the Kindle Book and I reread it regularly. In fact,......more

"To be a Christian means to forgive the inexcusable, because God has forgiven the inexcusable in you." C.S. Lewis' popularity has died in more recent history. Academics accuse him of being too simplistic in his expression (a few that I have read even go so far as to say that he adds nothing to Ch......more

It's been a while since I'd last read Lewis--and this book did not disappoint! The titular essay was easily my favorite of the lot. But his reflections on pacifism and what makes live worth living were also superb--and there were a number of great insights in the other essays as well. Leaves you wit......more
