Joseph Thomas Sheridan Le Fanu (1814–1873) was an Irish writer best known for his horror fiction. A meticulous craftsman Le Fanu was a master of tone and effect, rather than “shock horrorâ€, and frequently reworked plots and ideas from his earlier short stories for his novels, which also included Gothic fiction and mysteries. A leading writer of the Victorian era, his most popular works are Uncle Silas, Carmilla, and The House by the Churchyard.
