Synopsis

Noir master Scott Phillips's The Walkaway explores the far-reaching consequences of the deception and violence of its predecessor, The Ice Harvest.

Summer 1989: Gunther Fahnstiel, once a tough cop who wasn't averse to taking a little side money from a certain madam, has just escaped the dementia ward of his Wichita nursing home. He's not exactly sure where he wants to go, but wherever it is, it has to do with the bag full of cash belonging to the man he accidentally backed over with his RV in 1979. During his search, Gunther begins to relive the violent fallout of that madam's sex lottery forty years ago. As Gunther's memories unravel, his past and present will collide in a devastating reckoning. This dark comedy, at once prequel and sequel to Phillips's award-winning debut The Ice Harvest, proves that no walkaway can escape unscathed.

It’s hard to know what to expect in a book by Scott Phillips. There will be dark humor, and there will probably be a crime, though not necessarily, and whatever crime is committed may not be strictly illegal; more of a crime against conscience. For all the unpredictability, his books never disappoin......more

Click off your sense of humor; lock up your thirst for the absurd; throttle your taste for slapstick; do all that and you can still find a satisfying few hours of enjoyment in "The Walkaway". But if you keep your mind open to life's quirky turns and remember to chuckle at the crazy stuff, you will f......more

Years ago, when I first stumbled upon The Walkaway, I thought it was the source material for the Paul Newman geezer heist film, Where the Money Is. However, Newman’s second-to-last live-action film bears a little resemblance: he’s a career thief moved to a nursing home who appears to be an immobiliz......more

A completely unnecessary prequel and sequel to the author's perfect, inky-black-humored, Christmas Eve noir caper The Ice Harvest, The Walkaway still has plenty of fun to offer. The bumper crop of ne'er-do-wells that appear here -- all interconnected by family, marriage, adultery or some kind of ill......more
