"We are a nation of two, a witch and a warrior, a warrior and a witch, and we lie under the stars at night so close that our pulses touch." What a wonderful retelling! I am such a fan of mythology retold from women's perspectives and this one did not disappoint. It really felt like a fairy tale and i......more

The Valkyrie is an epic tale of Brynhild, a fallen Valkyrie banished to Midgard (Earth) for opposing Odin’s decisions on who lives and dies. What does a fallen Valkyrie do first? Go on an epic journey to kill a Lindworm that is poisoning and killing the land and its people of course. There are epic b......more

Outstanding!! This author is on my must-read list. Amazingly, every time I think Heartfield has outdone herself, she does it AGAIN. It is a wonder. As is this book. If you love your myths retold and brought into fiery, vivid new life--or if you just want a terrific story with memorable characters--thi......more

I went into this book without fully knowing what it was about, I just saw the title and cover and thought, This looks like my kind of read! And I have to say, past me made the right call. This is essentially a retelling of the Brynhild saga, featuring the Valkyrie cast to earth by Odin, her betrayal......more

I love Heartfield’s writing, and this book is my new favorite. She takes on Norse mythology against an underused backdrop of a Europe torn by war among tribes, Huns, and Romans. With eloquent prose, the two heroines trade stories addressed to each other. Brynhild is a Valkyrie freshly exiled from Va......more

Quotes

Praise for The Valkyrie ‘Reading THE VALKYRIE,I felt as if I were meeting old friends again for the first time. Kate Heartfield as taken a story I’ve read in many incarnations and still surprised and delighted me. Practically every sentence is a brilliant kenning, glittering brightly enough to match Fafnir’s hoard. This fierce and imaginative retelling, full of history and magic, does for the Ring Cycle what Atwood’s PENELOPIAD did for THE ODYSSEY’ ‘THE VALKYRIE is a richly-told and deeply-felt tale about finding ones place in the world. A sharp, radiant book to fit the women whose stories it recounts. Kate Heartfield is one of those rare writers who always make me feel as if what they’re writing, no matter how fantastical, is true. Whatever she told me in a story, I would believe it. Gods, dragons and all.’ ‘THE VALKYRIE sings, like the epic it is, without ever letting go of its groundedness, its bloodiedness. A secret history of the sagas, a story from behind the stories of old‒a war story, a love story that, once you see it emerge gleaming and gory from those bardic silences, seems like it was always there.’ Praise for Kate Heartfield ‘Where fantasy and history meet…An entertaining and dark read’ ‘An absorbing novel…a fine balance between history and fantasy’ ‘Spellbinding’ ‘Beautifully written’
