The Treasure of Abbot Thomas

This audiobook is narrated by an AI Voice.
In the archives of a German abbey, the English antiquary Mr Somerton finds a riddle left behind by Abbot Thomas von Eschenhausen, a sixteenth-century churchman rumoured to have hidden a fortune in gold before his death. The clue is hidden in the painted glass of the abbey windows, in Latin inscriptions and in a line of scripture about the one who keeps watch.

Somerton solves it. He finds the well in the ruins and climbs down to the stone that hides the treasure. But Abbot Thomas left a guardian with his gold, and in the dark at the bottom of that well, something reaches back.

From Ghost Stories of an Antiquary (1904), The Treasure of Abbot Thomas is one of the finest tales by M.R. James, the master of the English ghost story. It combines an ingenious cipher puzzle with a moment of pure, unforgettable terror.
