The Transition of Juan Romero

This audiobook is narrated by an AI Voice.
Deep in the Cactus Mountains of the American West, the Norton Mine cuts further into the earth than any shaft has a right to go. When blasting opens an abyss at the bottom of the mine, the miners find a hole so deep that no rope and no lantern can reach its floor.

That night a low throbbing rises from below, like a great drum beating in the heart of the mountain. Juan Romero, a silent Mexican labourer with an ancient Aztec look about him, hears it call his name, and he descends toward whatever waits in the dark.

Written in 1919, The Transition of Juan Romero is an early tale of cosmic horror by H.P. Lovecraft. Set in a Southwestern mining camp, it blends buried Aztec mystery with the abyss beneath the world and looks forward to the great weird fiction still to come.
