Synopsis

Three generations, one heartbreaking secret—and the past about to be uncovered …Jess Penhaligon is on her way to London to receive an award for her botanical painting. Hosting her will be Kate, who gladly welcomes her into her home. Jess' own family fell apart several years ago, so she is grateful for Kate's friendliness—and for her close unit of extended family and friends, who embrace Jess just as warmly. As the group begins reminiscing about their pasts and sharing their stories with Jess, it becomes apparent that her family history may be linked with theirs. Long-buried secrets from past generations are being uncovered, but at what cost have they been kept hidden?

About Marcia Willett

Marcia Willett’s early life was devoted to the ballet, but her dreams of becoming a ballerina ended when she grew out of the classical proportions then required. She had always loved books, and a family crisis made her take up a new career as a novelist—a decision she has never regretted. She lives in a beautiful, wild part of Devon with her husband, where she loves to be visited by her son and his young family.

About Lucy Rayner

Lucy Rayner is an award-winning British actress. Bitten hard by the acting bug whilst performing at the Edinburgh Festival as a teenager, she has gone on to work on both sides of the Atlantic in a number of theater productions and films, many of which have screened at festivals around the world. She loves to tell stories and voice characters in a number of British regional accents and has narrated many wonderful audiobooks. She has a master's degree in history from the University of Edinburgh and is a graduate of the Lee Strasberg Institute in New York City.

This book is full of relationships; it's a continuation of the saga that began years and years ago with the story of the Navy families, and I don't wonder that some people gave it up, because there's a lot of relevant back story in 5 or 6 other books and no mention of that at all in the cover copy.......more

I loved this book even without the back story for the characters. I agree that it takes a while to get your head around the characters; I did have to write them down in the early stages, but once I'd got that straight I really loved the book......more

In the Nineties my mum and I read all the Rosamunde Pilcher books. I love Cornwall and Devon and every now and then I’m drawn inexplicably back to that part of England. I can’t afford a ticket at the moment, so I let Marcia Willett take me there in her wonderful descriptions of the Tamar river. But i......more

If ever a book needed a cast of characters listing in the beginning then 'The Sea Garden' by Marcia Willett is it! It was incredibly confusing and took me ages to figure out who everyone was. Quotes

The Sea Garden weaves a double spell: Lawrenson steeps her story of the invisible heroes of the French Resistance crossing borders—and here, crossing time—deep in the eerie beauty of the South of France. The result is a marvelous strange fruit: think Graham Greene with a dash of Poe.” Sarah Blake, New York Times bestselling author of The Postmistress

“Lawrenson writes compassionately and convincingly of the war’s horrors and the ways in which ordinary people become heroes, continuously building the tension toward a never-saw-it-coming convergence of the trio of tales.” Entertainment Weekly

With agile inventiveness and cunning insight, Willett delicately explores the ephemeral nature of time and its effect on love and friendship.” Booklist

“A satisfying multigenerational novel tying long-ago friends, family, and secret lovers to the present.” Kirkus Reviews
