Synopsis

During the long, cold winter of 1692, seven young ladies from Salem, Massachusetts, begin to display disturbing symptoms. They're convulsing, contorting, cowering, and croaking strange sounds. Finding no help from medical books, the village doctor declares them bewitched. Having already triggered more than 60,000 executions in Europe, the fear of witchcraft begins its work-even among sensible, down-to-earth New Englanders. And before it's all over, 141 people are arrested-19 women are hanged, one man is crushed to death, and four others die in jail. But long after the damning "testimony" of ghosts-seen and heard only by the "bewitched"-was forever banned from courts, one question remains: What really happened? Jane Yolen-whose hundreds of books have garnered numerous accolades, including Golden Kite and Nebula Awards-teams up with her private detective daughter Heidi Elisabet Yolen Stemple to craft this Oppenheim Toy Portfolio Platinum Award winner. Jessica Almasy's stellar narration adds luster to a baffling episode in U.S. history. "This [book] effectively introduces an intriguing subject, and the mystery of what really happened is more than enough to whet kids' appetites."-Booklist "This is an innovative way to involve young people in the study of history."-Children's Literature "The investigative approach . encourages readers to evaluate the evidence ."-Library Journal

About Jane Yolen

Born and raised in New York City, Jane Yolen now lives in Hatfield, Massachusetts. She attended Smith College and received her master's degree in education from the University of Massachusetts. The distinguished author of more than 170 books, Jane Yolen is a person of many talents. When she is not writing, Yolen composes songs, is a professional storyteller on the stage, and is the busy wife of a university professor, the mother of three grown children, and a grandmother. All of Yolen's stories and poems are rooted in her sense of family and self. The Emperor and the Kite, which was a Caldecott Honor Book in 1983 for its intricate paper-cut illustrations by Ed Young, was based on Yolen's relationship with her late father, who was an international kite-flying champion. Owl Moon, winner of the 1988 Caldecott Medal for John Schoenherr's exquisite watercolors, was inspired by her husband's interest in birding.

This is a pretty great beginners' book about a dark and painful incident in American history. The illustrations are beautiful and a big reason (along with subject matter) why I chose to read this book. The incident is laid out in plain facts that read rather poetically. In the end the reader is give......more

Our literacy coach, Cris Tovani, has advised an ELA teacher to use this in her classroom with 10th graders. Its intended audience is pretty young: the note at the front is a kid telling other kids, "When I group up, I want to be a detective, just like my dad." I think high school teachers maybe shou......more

This beautiful picture book explains the history behind the Salem witch trials for the younger set without gruesome details (although death is mentioned). It's the only book I've found for younger students on this subject that is age-appropriate (in my opinion). I also like the mystery aspect (the e......more
