This is deeply lovely. It's not perfect, and there are definitely moments when Hadley loses control of his prose and both he and you get a bit lost. But the attempt to truly and earnestly show the road as it has been throughout all of its history is such an ambitious one that I can forgive him those......more
i think the prose escaped the author at times. although this was full of interesting information, it became meandering and difficult to follow fairly quickly. i liked the idea behind this book but it’s execution was not particularly engaging for me.......more
The passion the author has for his subject shines throughout. I loved the book so much more than I expected, but would probably avoid getting into conversation with him at parties. 😅......more
In picking this book up at a local bookshop, I was reminded of Monty Python’s answer to the question “What did the Roman’s give (or leave) us” – roads. Whilst Christopher Hadley’s book makes no mention of this Python skit, ‘The Road’ tells us why the Python crew were correct. Hadley traces the path of......more
An interesting subject and I enjoyed it up to about half way. Then I became overwhelmed with the micro detail of the local landscape and although many of stories and folklore Hadley draws in are compelling, as a reader I ran out of steam! A BOOK OF THE YEAR ‘There’s something beguilingly mysterious about these ancient roads . . . When searching for his road, Hadley makes full use of his senses. . . the breadth of his knowledge . . . the beauty of his prose. This book deserves to be read at least twice, first to appreciate what it reveals and then to luxuriate in its effervescent voice. On nearly every page a random passage takes one’s breath away’ ‘Magnificent . . . exciting . . . This is no dry and prosaic history, but a work of imagination and a deeply literary book… wonderful prose . . . striking images and lapidary sentences… enthralling. It’s an absolute joy to read and an early contender for every list of History Books of the Year’ ‘In this magnificent book. . . Hadley takes us down a different way, looking through a gentler window on that road's long lost days. He reveals own intimate knowledge of the land it knew and the folk it's known, turning the tables on what we think we're reading; because is not really about , it's about us’ ‘Loving , [it’s] about a Roman road but also a rumination on the past and our relationship with it. [An] excellent companion piece to his previous book about a dragon slayer’s tomb. The pair offer a whole new and very exciting model for how to do local history. Highly recommend’ ‘Ingeniously constructed…scholarly…wears its learning lightly… is engagingly written…and always a pleasure to read’ ‘The book offers a wealth of historical knowledge in a fashion which is entertaining and readable… combines scholarly depth with wonderfully lyrical depictions of the English landscape’
