Synopsis

In London in 1735, elevenyearold Forrest Harper is living with his family at the Tower of London where he helps his father tend the ravens and guard the prisoners. Still, life is lonely. When vicious Scottish Rebels are captured, Forrest is delighted, even though the Harpers are only given custody of Maddy, a Scottish Rebels daughter. Soon a friendship grows between them. But when she is slated for execution, Forrest is faced with a horrifying choice: to commit treason and help her escape or obey the law and allow his innocent friend to be executed.

About Elvira Woodruff

Elvira Woodruff based the relationship between the characters Lucy and Glory on the close bond she had with her own two sisters while she was growing up. And as she sat in her study, in the company of an antique doll who watched wisely from the top shelf, she also drew inspiration from her love of dolls and history.
Ms. Woodruff is the author many popular middle-grade novels, including The Orphan of Ellis Island, The Magnificent Mummy Maker, Dear Levi, George Washington’s Socks, and a recent picture book, The Memory Coat, illustrated by Michael Dooling. Her books have won many awards and honors. And the hundreds of letters she receives from children she visits at schools each year keep her excited about writing. She lives in Martin’s Creek, Pennsylvania, where she keeps a garden that is filled with morning glories.
Elvira Woodruff’s trademark style of making history accessible by combining compelling stories with intriguing characters makes her a hands-down favorite with contemporary readers. She lives in Martin’s Creek, Pennsylvania, with her husband Joe.

The author painted a vivid picture of the setting without overburdening the text with dry facts. The plot was fast paced and I loved the themes of strength a......more

It's a tale of growing up, courage, sacrifice, and making the hard decisions between doing what is right and what is safe. I loved the characters and their depth, an......more
