Synopsis

While on a visit to London, American genealogist Jefferson Tayte’s old friend and colleague dies in his arms. Before long, Tayte and a truth-seeking historian, Professor Jean Summer, find themselves following a corpse-ridden trail that takes them to the Royal Society of London, circa 1708.What to make of the story of five men of science, colleagues of Isaac Newton and Christopher Wren, who were mysteriously hanged for high treason? As they edge closer to the truth, Tayte and the professor find that death is once again in season. A new killer, bent on restoring what he sees as the true, royal bloodline, is on the loose...as is a Machiavellian heir-hunter who senses that the latest round of murder, kidnapping, and scandal represents an unmissable business opportunity. The Last Queen of England is a racing thriller with a heart-stopping conclusion. It is the third book in the Jefferson Tayte Genealogical Mystery series but can be enjoyed as a stand-alone story.

News flash: Acheologists have recently discovered the bones of the despised Richard III, and DNA tests showed that the current queen is not descended from him in any way. This news was in a small article on page 10 of the Guardian newspaper and raised no ripples anywhere else. So this mystery novel based on the idea that there might be someone out there with a greater claim to the throne than Eliz II seems kind of silly since the DNA test suggests that there must be hundreds of them. The idea that the disclosure of this new claimant would destroy the British government and bring down the monarchy is downright laughable. Article II of the Treaty of Union in1707 makes it clear that Parliament makes the rules that determine who will be the monarch. So this book ends up being a well written, action packed thriller about ... nothing. At least it is read by the inestimable Simon Vance, so you can enjoy his wonderful range of accents while also laughing at his attempt at an American accent which sounds more like Sean Connery than an American.
