Synopsis

Title: The HorlaAuthor: Guy de MaupassantNarrator: Jonathan DunneOriginal Publication: 1887Public Domain: YesSeries Placement: Timeless Terrors No. 64Description:The Horla is one of Guy de Maupassant’s most unsettling tales — a study of madness, obsession, and the invisible forces that may govern our lives. Told in the form of a diary, the story follows an unnamed narrator whose calm, orderly life gradually unravels as he becomes convinced that an unseen, supernatural being is haunting him — controlling his thoughts, his desires, and even his will to live.Maupassant blends psychological horror with the uncanny, crafting a story where fear grows not from gore, but from the creeping realization that the human mind may be powerless against what it cannot perceive. The ordinary becomes sinister: windows seem to watch, the air feels heavy with presence, and the night is filled with a silent, inescapable dread.Narrated by Amazon-bestselling horror author Jonathan Dunne, this performance captures the mounting terror and disorientation of Maupassant’s masterpiece. While the text itself is fully in the public domain, this narration and production are copyright © 2025 Jonathan Dunne.Part of Timeless Terrors, a series devoted to reviving the classics of horror, The Horla is a chilling reminder that some fears are real — and some presences are beyond comprehension. ️

About Guy de Maupassant

Guy de Maupassant (1850–1893) was an extemely prolific French writer who is considered one of the fathers of the modern short story. His stories range in length from one or two pages to a full-length novel. Free from sentimentality or idealism, they expose in minute detail the pretenses and vulgarity of the period's middle class and traditional low-down of the Norman peasants. De Maupassant's style is characterized by a simplicity and directness that is sometimes comic and ironic. His work reflects his interest in the emotional problems of all classes and his passion for women. He also excelled at revealing the hidden sides of people. His first short story, "Ball of Fat," is considered one of his best. He is also the author of "The Necklace," "The House of Madame Tellier," and the novel A Woman's Life.
