Synopsis

Okiku wants vengeance … and she gets it. Whenever there’s a monster hurting a child—the same way she was hurt three hundred years ago in Japan—her spirit is there to deliver punishment. But one American boy draws her like no other. The two are pulled into a world of eerie doll rituals and dark Shinto exorcisms that will take them from the American Midwest to the remote valleys and shrines of Aomori, Japan. The boy is not a monster, but something evil writhes beneath his skin, trapped by a series of intricate tattoos. Can Okiku protect him? Or is her presence only bringing more harm?

4.45/5 ⭐ Full review on my Blog: The Dacian She-Wolf 🐺 If you are a tea drinker then this is your lucky day my friend because I have the perfect recommendation for you. This book goes so well with blood orange tea that I think I don't even want to consider this a well-put pun. I am not joking though.......more

Well, this book was almost like The Ring. Just as creepy and terrifying. My tour of demons keeps on keeping for some reason. However, this book wanted to throw in dolls as well, which is my 2nd fear, right up there with clowns. Recommend! Though, you might need to burn some sage while reading this.......more

Quotes

“A fantastically creepy story sure to keep readers up at night… Okiku is one of the most interesting YA characters to date.” RT Book Reviews (4½ stars, Top Pick!)

“A powerful debut…Unfolds with creepy imagery and an intimate appreciation for Japanese horror, myth, and legend.” Publishers Weekly (starred review)

“A superior creep factor that is pervasive in every lyrical word…Solidly scary and well worth the read.” Booklist

“Just the right blend of contemporary teenage life and the fantasy of a ghost story…Well written and fast paced.” VOYA

“Arnd’t crisp, clean diction smooths over the non-English vocabulary, allowing listeners to luxuriate in the Japanese folklore. Her lyrical delivery of poetic scenes heightens the jolt when evil strikes…The calm tones and even pacing Arndt maintains belie the surrealism of Talk’s and his mother’s experiences while simultaneously racketing the tension. …Although appropriate for teens, this elegant, atmospheric story easily appeals to adults.” Booklist (audio review)
