Synopsis

Gene Richards is haunted by a voice, and he doesn't like what it's saying. He's trying to ignore it—pretend it's not real—but the voice has plans for Gene. A long time ago, something bad happened in the town of Magnolia—something that Gene's grandfather and his friends want to keep quiet. The voice has started hurting those who were responsible, and it won't give up until Gene uncovers the town's eerie past. Determined to clear his grandfather's name, Gene and his friends start reading old newspapers and digging for the truth. But the voice is running out of patience, and Gene must do something before his grandfather becomes the next victim. James Lincoln Collier has captured the fear and curiosity that come when the past is called into question. The suspense lasts to the final minutes in this ghost story turned mystery.

I'm surprised this book hasn't been challenged or banned-maybe it has. If I'd read this when I was little it would have freaked me out, but I have an overactive imagination and OCD. Set during the depression, it is the story of a young boy (Gene) who is visited by a specter hellbent on revenge again......more

As mysteries go, this wasn't bad. Set during the depression, the main character, Eugene, and his two friends explore a scandal from the past. There are supernatural elements. Ghosts. Etc. But at the same time, the ending was abrupt and anticlimactic. Loose ends tied up too quickly and too neatly. And......more

Despite a VERY weak ending (that's also a "deus ex machina"), I'm recommending this book for kids who are looking for a different kind of ghost story. (You can read the description; I won't go into it here.) There's plenty of interesting things going on and some of the book gets quite dark, so I'd p......more

Quotes

“A satisfying page-turner and will keep middle-grade mystery fans engaged until the very end.” Children’s Literature

“Sean Crisden delivers an eerily effective performance, giving a Poe-ish atmosphere to this dark children’s story. With a low, throaty voice he captures the entity that seeks revenge for past wrongs by possessing various residents of Magnolia. Crisden’s vocal versatility conveys the personalities of the bold yet simple-minded Sonny and spunky tomboy Sammy as they help their friend, Eugene, fight off the ghostly specter’s attempts to drive him to murder.” AudioFile

“A complex, spooky page-turner for middle-grade readers.” Booklist

“The first-person narrative, fast-paced prose and careful plotting make this a satisfying page-turner.” Kirkus Reviews
