Synopsis

JaQuavis Coleman chillingly chronicles the life and crimes of Harlem resident Hazel Brown as she rises to the highest highs and spirals into an inevitable, devastating downfall.Hazel has nothing and no one in her life; the only thing she “owns” is an insatiable addiction to heroin. Her addiction brings her to the slums, where she quickly learns the tricks of surviving—of hustling and getting her street smarts. She’ll do anything to feed her habit, even if it means robbing and conning and selling her own body. Yet no matter how much heroin she does, the pain that has cut deep within her never goes away. The Dopefiend is a story so intimate and compellingly written, you’ll feel like you’re walking in Hazel’s shoes.

I liked this less than book one, probably because I wasn't attached to Millie in The Dopeman's Wife and that continued here. Plus it was her fault Hazel got hooked on heroin and why it took her so long to try and get clean. There were also inconsistencies in the storyline, most notably the one at the......more

I love everything that JaQuavis and Ashley writes. I think that JaQuavis did a good job on this book and I can't wait to read the Dopeman:Memoirs of A Snitch next week. The only problem that I had with the story is the part where Millie went to see Apple in jail but was told he was dead on page 193,......more

Good story but how did Millie put flowers on Apples grave then later visits him in jail only to find out he's dead!?! Also a lot of other corrections needed to be made! For Jaquavis to have this many mistakes in one of his books!?......more

3.5 - JaQuavis Coleman is a good writer. He's proves this time and again with his books with Ashley Antoinette Snell. For this reason some of the more stupid mistakes in this story piss me off. I'll include a few examples but first I want to say that it's a good book. It's a good trilogy in general......more

Quotes

“Coleman, of the writing duo Ashley JaQuavis, strikes out on his own by opening his story with a hard punch to the gut. There’s something to be said for an author bold enough to off a main character on the second page…Marked by authentic street slang and up-to-the-minute hip-hop name-dropping, this hood tale’s Romeo and Juliet theme will keep readers turning pages long into the night.” Library Journal on The Dopeman’s Wife
