Synopsis

Since their discovery in 1947, the Dead Sea Scrolls have become an icon in popular culture that transcends their status as ancient Jewish manuscripts. Everyone has heard of the Scrolls, but amidst the conspiracies, the politics, and the sensational claims, it can be difficult to separate the myths from the reality.

In this Very Short introduction, Timothy Lim discusses the cultural significance of the finds, and the religious, political, and legal controversies during the seventy years of study since the discovery. He also looks at the contribution the Scrolls have made to our understanding of the Old Testament or Hebrew Bible, and the origins of early Christianity. Exploring the most recent scholarly discussions on the archaeology of Khirbet Qumran, and the study of the biblical texts, the canon, and the history of the Second Temple Period, he considers what the scrolls reveal about sectarianism in early Judaism. Was the archaeological site of Qumran a center of monastic life, a fortress, a villa, or a pottery factory? Why were some of their biblical texts so different from the ones that we read today? Did they have "a Bible?" Who were the Essenes and why did they think that humanity is to be divided between "the sons of light" and those in darkness? And do the Scrolls reflect the teachings of the earliest followers of Jesus?

A quick look at the Dead Sea Scrolls. Not all of it was zippy dialogue and some of it rather bored me, but I came away with a few new nuggets of information rolling around in my head, so I consider it a win. I think I'd only recommend this to those people who have no idea what they are or what they co......more

These "very short introduction" books are very good as they provide the right amount of information for people - at least for me - to begin to understand the subject, especially when the subject is the Dead Sea Scrolls, one of the greatest manuscript discoveries of the 20th Century. The chapters des......more

This book is poorly written, though it does contain some good information. Rather than beginning by explaining what the Dead Sea Scrolls are, this book spends the first fift of the book by listing off random places where the Dead Sea Scrolls have appeared in recent popular culture. This is a strange......more

Just before reading this, I assumed I knew a fair amount about the Dead Sea Scrolls and was talking about them when I realised I was thinking of the Rosetta Stone. Turns out I knew nothing about the Dead Sea Scrolls beyond "I think they revolutionised our understanding of early Christianity or someth......more
