Synopsis

The acclaimed BBC Radio 4 dramatisation of Anthony Trollope's gently satirical tales of provincial life

One of the most respected, successful chroniclers of nineteenth-century life, Anthony Trollope is still widely read and much-loved today. The Barchester Chronicles - witty moral comedies with a wonderful range of characters - are among his most popular tales.

The first in the series, The Warden, finds Rev. Harding forced to question the moral basis of the life he is leading; and in the sequel, Barchester Towers, the Reverend is now plain Mr Harding, bound up in a tale of intrigue, hypocrisy and ambition that will delight the listener.

Dr Thorne is a gripping drama of wealth and wedlock; while Framley Parsonage tells the story of a naive, ambitious young clergyman whose unwise associations bring him to the brink of ruin. The Small House at Allington explores the power of devotion, in the form of Lily Dale’s love for self-seeking Adolphus Crosbie.

Finally, The Last Chronicle of Barset sees the most popular characters from Trollope’s earlier novels, including the Proudies, Lily, Mr Harding and Archdeacon Grantly, reunited in a moving tale of honesty triumphing over hypocrisy.

Nearly twenty hours of ironic, witty and wonderfully written drama is contained in this collection. With a star cast including Brenda Blethyn, Eleanor Bron, Kenneth Cranham, Anna Massey, Leo McKern, Simon Russell Beale, Amanda Root, Alex Jennings, David Haig, Rosemary Leach and Emma Fielding, it is guaranteed to appeal to all fans of Trollope’s comic masterpieces.

I am definitely hooked on Anthony Trollop. I said in other reviews of his books that the only reason he is not as popular as Dickens or Austen is that his novels are too long and most readers don’t want to tackle that much. For someone who pumped out 47 novels I think he might have wanted to pare th......more

The Warden Mr. Harding is the warden of what is called a hospital, although more like what we would call an assisted living center here in America. In the 15th century, the Will of one John Hiram bequeathed certain property to care for aged men of the parish no longer able to work and a stipend for a......more

Excellent writing This complete set of the Chronicles of Barsetshire has been a joy to read. From our introduction to Septimus Harding in the beginning, to the close of his life at the end Trollope weaves the tales of the people of Barchester together masterfully. Always with an eye on the role of th......more

Why wouldn't I expect this book to be dated? A friend used to rave about Trollope. I resisted at the time though I've always been a fan of Dickens, Austen, etc. This audio version is dramatized with a cast of actors and musical chapter breaks. But it's not enough to win me over from the misogyny, th......more

I totally enjoy anything by Anthony Trollope. I had first watched the Barchester Chronicles in the video version, which I highly recommend. Simon Raven wrote the script; he's a brilliant screen writer and novelist.......more
