Synopsis

“My own mind is my own church.” - Thomas Paine

The Age of Reason is one of the most inspirational demonstrations of religious criticism and Enlightenment thought. Paine advocates for reason and freethinking in the place of revelation, deftly employing common language, irreverent wit, and rhetorical style to carry his contentions to everyday people, not just the aristocracy. He argues for the philosophical position of deism, promoting natural sciences and the existence of a creator-God. Paine rejects religious doctrine and priestcraft worldwide, and notoriously views the Bible as an ordinary and flawed piece of literature, rather than a divinely-inspired text. The Age of Reason is his final work, and it is the culmination of his influential ideology and publications, from Common Sense to The American Crisis to The Rights of Man.

This audiobook edition of The Age of Reason is complete and definitive, including Part One (1794), Part Two (1795), and Part Three (1807), as well as an editor’s Introduction based on Elbert Hubbard’s 1908 Essay “A Little Journey to the Home of Thomas Paine”. It is narrated in American English with no period affectations.

About Thomas Paine

Thomas Paine (1737-1809) was an author, radical, inventor, intellectual, revolutionary, and one of the Founding Fathers of the United States. A participant in both the American and French Revolutions and in the governments that first arose from them, Paine is best remembered as the highly popular pamphleteer whose incendiary Common Sense was largely responsible for motivating the American colonists to declare independence. His other notable contributions are Rights of Man, The Age of Reason, Agrarian Justice, and The American Crisis, a pro-revolutionary pamphlet series.
