Synopsis

Vaudeville actress Leah Randall took on her most daring role ever when she impersonated missing heiress Jessie Carr in order to claim Jessie's inheritance in The Impersonator. Now that the dust has settled around that tumultuous time in her life, Leah has adopted Jessie's name as her own and moved to Hollywood, where she's taken a modest but steady job in the silent film industry.Jessie's thrilled when Bruno Heilmann, a movie studio bigwig, invites her to a party. She's even more delighted to run into a face from her past at that party. But the following day, Jessie learns that sometime in the wee hours of the morning both her old friend and Bruno Heilmann were brutally murdered. She's devastated, but with her skill as an actress, access to the wardrobes and resources of a film studio, and a face not yet famous enough to be recognized, Jessie is uniquely positioned to dig into the circumstances surrounding these deaths. But will doing so put her own life directly in the path of a murderer? With Silent Murders, MB/MWA First Crime Novel Competition winner Mary Miley has crafted another terrifically fun mystery, this time set in the dizzying, dazzling heart of Jazz Age Hollywood.

After solving the disappearance of the girl she was impersonating, Jessie's decided to move to Hollywood and put down some roots. I liked 'The Impersonator' better but this one was still enjoyable. Jessie is such a likable character that I don't care how flimsy the mystery is. I liked all the old Hollywood glamour, especially the appearances of classic stars like Douglas Fairbanks, Mary Pickford, & Myrna Loy.......more

Quotes

“Miley captures both the elegance and the absurdity of Hollywood in the Jazz Age. And Jessie truly is a honey.” New York Times Book Review

“The newest book in Miley’s Roaring Twenties mystery series takes the reader inside Hollywood’s silent film industry. It was a time of big stars living large, and some of them figure prominently in the story. Miley’s sleuth Jessie is a gem. This entertaining mystery brings to life a colorful era in America’s past.” RT Book Reviews (4 stars)

“Miley draws on the unsolved 1922 murder of Hollywood director William Desmond Taylor for her absorbing follow-up to The Impersonator…Readers will enjoy the novel’s taut climax, cameos by famous and future stars, and a resourceful heroine who uses her acting skills in investigating and escaping from trouble.” Publishers Weekly

“What happens off camera is as dramatic as what’s in the frame when serial murders intrude on Jazz Age Hollywood…A brisk, knowing adventure whose self-reliant but vulnerable heroine takes big risks for her Hollywood boss and stops just short of romance with two men who couldn’t be more different. Only the sequel will tell which one she chooses and who she’ll be next.” Kirkus Reviews
