Most Americans know very little about the conquest of India by the British so these first volumes of Cornwell's Richard Sharpe series offer a glimpse into a a period of extraordinary achievement by the British. And as usual, Cornwell tells a very exciting story that is nearly impossible to put down. Frederick Davidson's reading of the book has a cultured diffidence that was initially off-putting, but the voices he uses for the various characters are so good that the overall experience of listening to his reading is a good one.

I've read and re-read the Sharpe series countless times. For me, they're arguably one of the finest collections of historical fiction written. Cornwell knows what he's doing and does it well.
