Synopsis

Yoga is divided into several branches, ranging from that which teaches the control of the body, to that which teaches the attainment of the highest spiritual development. In the work we will not go into the higher phases of the subject, except when the "science of breath" touches upon the same. The Science of Breath touches yoga at many points, and although chiefly concerned with the development and control of the physical, has also its psychic side, and even enters the field of spiritual development. The first part of the book is devoted to the physical phase of the science of breath; then the psychic and mental sides are considered, and finally the spiritual side is touched upon. We may be pardoned if we express ourselves as pleased with our success in condensing so much yogi lore into so few minutes, and by the use of words and terms which may be understood by anyone. Our only fear is that its very simplicity may cause some to pass it by as unworthy of attention, while they pass on their way searching for something "deep", mysterious and non-understandable. However, the Western mind is eminently practical, and we know that it is only a question of a short time before it will recognize the practicability of this work. We greet our students, with our most profound saalam, and bid them be seated for their first lesson in the yogi science of breath.

I got this book as a Kindle freebie. It’s made available for free because it’s in the public domain, not necessarily because it was so bad that the author couldn’t even get people to pay $0.99 for it. It was written by an American named William Walker Atkinson, who also went by the pseudonym of Yogi......more

#67 of 100 self help books Good ‘The Great Sea of life is swelling and receding, rising and falling and we are responding to its vibrations and rhythms’. A slim volume that contains an innovative approach to breath, as both an action and a surrender. Engaging with the basic truths of human anatomy, th......more

This book was difficult to review because it’s more of a guide on how to breathe rather than just sharing information. One quote in the book sums it up. “He who tastes a grain of mustard seed knows more of its flavor than he who sees and elephant load of it.” In my opinion, an accurate review can’t......more

This is an introductory book on pranayama which covers various breathing techniques and exercises. Although somewhat informative, I don't believe this book is detailed enough both in terms of theory and instruction to start a practice. I'm also concerned about the safety of these techniques especial......more

This little book is very dense and contains 34 meaningfully distinct exercises ranging from basic breathing to psychic healing. Compared to the Western science in the Oxygen Advantage, the description is slightly less in-depth but pretty good. From my experience with Reiki, the psychic healing fits......more
