The Red Moon was not due yet.
On a contested ridge between marsh and mountain, two patrols — orc and elf — meet by accident. Bows lift. Axes loosen. No one fires.
Then the moon turns red, three nights ahead of any count. The mire wakes. What rises from it drives both patrols into the cliffs together.
Wounded and stranded, an orc warrior named Krateus and an elf scout named Esteti survive only because the land itself refuses to let them die. In a cave above the swamp, something ancient speaks through the stone — and the first horn is heard.
