This entry was during the Smoke Jensen series where needless and irritating flashbacks were common. A few books before this a number of the books had nearly a fifth of the novel set in flashbacks.At this point the flash backs had lessened, but still makeup 15 pages or so. Don't turn your back on the innocent. This was a different kind of story. Smoke Jensen really impressed me with his cautious approach to getting rid of the outlaws. And taking a young cowboy under his wing.......more

Smoke Jenson is another guilty pleasure. If I need to just read a good old western, I check William Johnstone first. He's built the history and cast of characters around Smoke that make every story feel like you're in it with friends.......more
