Synopsis

When the old woodcarver Geppetto decides to make a puppet boy to dance and turn summersaults, he doesn't know that he has chosen a magical piece of wood. To his amazement, his puppet can talk and play just like the liveliest child. But a human soul must be earned; and thus begin the adventures of Pinocchio.A tragicomic figure, Pinocchio is a poor, illiterate peasant boy with few choices in life who usually chooses to shirk his responsibilities and get into trouble. Pinocchio plays pranks on Geppetto, is duped by Fox and Cat, smashes the pedantic talking Cricket, and narrowly escapes death with the help of the bluehaired Fairy. But he is also brave, and as he stumbles from one predicament to the next, he makes his way unsteadily toward his heart's desire.

About Carlo Collodi

Carlo Collodi (1826-1890) was born in Florence, Italy, in 1826. At the age of twenty-two, he became a journalist to work for the Italian independence struggle and also wrote comedies and edited newspapers and reviews. In 1861, when Italy became a united nation, Collodi gave up journalism and settled down as a theatrical censor and magazine editor. He then turned to children's fantasy, and in 1881 the first chapter of Pinocchio appeared in the Giornale Dei Bambini and became an immediate success. Collodi died in Florence in 1890.

Outside of religious texts, The Adventures of Pinocchio is the most translated book in the world. It's now printed in over 300 languages and continues to be one of the best-selling books ever published. Surprised? I was. I guess I assumed Disney's movie had long-ago made the book irrelevant. Clearly......more

I don’t have kids. I read this for pleasure as a 32-year-old man. And, surprisingly, I definitely enjoyed it. As I made my way through the book, though, I kept trying to picture what a kid would think. It’s very weird. VERY weird, and kind of dark too. I’m not very familiar with the Disney version o......more

This was a challenge and a treat — reading the original story of Pinocchio in Italian! It’s been a long time since I saw the Disney movie, but it was obvious to me that Disney, er, Disney-fied the story quite a bit. The original tale is a lot darker and a lot funnier. I loved the fight with Gepetto......more

Am citit......more

As is the case with many great and memorable children's tales, Pinocchio is predominated by the threat of violence and death. At one point the incorrigible puppet is actually lynched by a Fox and a Cat who are after his gold coins. The Talking Cricket (the model for Disney's Jiminy Cricket) is kille......more
