Synopsis

May,1902 – the last days of the 2nd Anglo-Boer War of 1899 – 1902.Place: Noupoort, Northern Cape, Southern Africa, military base of the British Cape Garrison.A romance-action novel: the story of two families struggling to survive a war. Caught up in the Geo-political hostilities of their age, the Kemp and the Dunne families become entangled in a web of of love and hate, deceit and betrayal. Both families are citizens of the Cape Colony, which is under British rule. But, like the rest of the Cape’s population, they are split into two opposing camps – those of European stock who support families and friends in the two tiny, new Boer republics across the border, north of the Cape Colony, and those of British stock who support the British Crown in their war with the republics. The widow Kemp and her son, her adopted son and her daughter, are suspected by the British authorities of being Boer sympathisers - possibly even ‘Cape Rebels’. They live on their farm, Batavia, mere kilometers away from the large British military base at Noupoort. The two Dunnes serve in the British Army, the brother as an officer in the Cape Mounted Rifles, and the sister as a nurse in the Number 6 and 26 military General Hospital at Noupoort. They are regarded by the Afrikaans-speaking faction of the Cape population as ‘traitors’.A riding accident sets off a chain of events that pits the two families against each other. Attraction, deceit and betrayal fuel the conflict between them. That, together with the ever-present mortal danger of the violence of the war around them, threatens to destroy them all.
