Synopsis

Long ago, and not entirely consciously, Liz Perle made a quiet contract with cash: She would do what it took to get it—work hard, marry right—but she didn't want to have to think about it too much. Since she was a young girl, the subject of money had been quietly sidestepped, a shadowy factor whose private influence was impolite to discuss. When a sudden divorce left Perle with no home, no job, a four year old and a box of toys, she realized she could no longer afford to leave her murky and fraught relationship with money unexamined.

What Perle discovered as she reassembled her life, both personally and professionally, was that almost every woman she knew also subscribed to this strange and emotional code of discretion. Women who were all too willing to tell each other about their deepest secrets or sexual assets still kept mum when it came to their financial ones.

In Money, A Memoir, Perle attempts to break this silence, adding her own story to the anecdotes and insights of psychologists, researchers and more than 200 "ordinary" women. It turned out that when money was the topic, most women needed permission to talk. Perle found when she confessed her fears and idiosyncrasies to other women, theirs came tumbling out as well. The result is an insightful, unflinching look at the subtle and commanding influence of money on our every relationship.

Money, A Memoir was a bit of a struggle to get through. Not much substance in a book that could've been an Oprah mag article. Basically, women don't think of money in the same way that men do. In fact, and this was really a piece I took away to chew on, many of us don't think about our money in a wa......more

2.5 stars. I thought I had a semi-dysfunctional relationship with money, until I read this book — now I feel positively normal. I couldn't really empathize with a lot of the emotions Perle articulates, because it was always clear to me that 1) a rich husband was not coming to save me financially, an......more

This book could be a little boring at times, which is why I gave it 3 ⭐️. Despite it having some dull moments this book was very insightful and thought provoking about a subject every person thinks about; MONEY! I think I felt comforted reading this book as it described how so many women have their......more

This is one of those "take-what-you-will" books. I agreed with a lot and disagreed with a lot, so I suppose it was effective as a thought-provoker. I felt that a lot of generalizations and panicked negatives were discussed in detail, but remained uncountered by any solutions, suggestions, or positiv......more

This book is a bit of a reversal of the whole wealthy spirit phenomenon. this book scares you to death so you want to be aware of every element of your finances. i think this and the wealthy spirit are a good pairing. this one forces you to assess your values and hangups- particularly if you, like m......more
