Synopsis

Tolkien’s acclaimed modern classic ‘fairie’ tale, read by Derek Jacobi. Leaf by Niggle recounts the strange adventures of the painter Niggle, who sets out to paint the perfect tree. But he senses that he will be snatched away from his work long before it is finished – if indeed it could ever be finished in this world. For it is in another and brighter place that Niggle finds his tree is finished, and learns that it is indeed a real tree, a true part of creation. Written in the early 1940s at the same time as The Lord of the Rings was taking shape, ‘Leaf by Niggle’ is a passionate adult fairy tale about a man who has ‘a long journey to make’, thought to be an allegory of Tolkien’s own life.

Another enchanting, captivating and instructive story by Tolkien. Short, very simple and yet filled with wonders and a hidden complexity. It was like a very beautiful fairy-tale written for children who haven't lost the ability to see the world with all its miracles yet. The story of Nig......more

The problem isn't his short-sighted vision of his grand and overwhelming project or the impending journey he must make and has yet to prepare for, it is the incessant inte......more

"Niggle was a painter. Not a very successful one, partly because he had many other things to do. Most of these things he thought were a nuisance; but he did them fairly well, when he could not get out of them: which (in his opinion) was far too often..." Tolkien's story, which was something of an all......more

Re-read 11/9/23. I cannot praise Derek Jacobi's narration of this on Audible enough. -------------------------- My heart. I love this little book. Of course I do! It was written by John Ronald Reuel for CRYING OUT LOUD. That man has never let me down. This little book is about Niggle: a sweet, little......more
