Synopsis

At last, a single volume that gathers together all of the short stories featuring Agatha Christie's most famous creation, Hercule Poirot. The dapper, mustache-twirling little Belgian with the egg-shaped head and curious mannerisms has solved some of the most puzzling crimes of the century—and, in his own humble opinion, is ""probably the greatest detective in the world.""In this complete collection of more than 50 stories, ranging from short tales to novellas, Poirot faces violent murders, poisonings, kidnappings, and thefts—all solved with his characteristic panache. Only Agatha Christie could have devised cases worthy of Hercule Poirot's skill and ""little gray cells.""

About Agatha Christie

What a daunting task to write about the most famous mystery writer, Agatha Christie. She was born in 1890 in England, where she was home schooled by her American father. It was an unusual way to be educated for the times. Her father did not want her to begin learning to read until age eight, but out of boredom, she taught herself to read by age five.

In his research, Curran found a plethora of information about Agatha. He outlines many of those interesting facts. Since there are so many, just a few will be mentioned here. Agatha could have been an excellent performer as a pianist, but she was much too shy to perform. She once had three plays running simultaneously in London. She traveled around the world in 1922, which would have been quite a feat back then. Agatha loved dogs. She has a rose named after her. She never did drink alcohol nor smoked. Her last public appearance was in 1974, at the premier of the movie, Murder on the Orient Express. Agatha Christie's name has appeared every day for 53 years in every newspaper with a West End London theatre listing. Her favorite flower was Lily of the Valley. The information about this illustrious author goes on and on. It is a great asset to readers that author John Curran wrote the definitive book about an iconic author. One other interesting fact was that Agatha met Archie Christie in 1912, married on Christmas Eve 1914, spending their honeymoon at The Grand Hotel in Torquay, but Archie returned to France on Dec 27th due to the War. Agatha and Archie fid not really experience married life until he was posted at the London War Office. Agatha has been quoted as saying only then did she feel that her married life truly began.

My review is bound to be boring. Have I lost you already? Anyway, if I had read the book recently for the first time, then I'd have set the rating at 5 stars. But who's counting? The brain behind this series is long dead. If only the life span of us humans was 200 or 300 years. Imagine Agatha Christi......more

Completionists beware! Even though I'm not sorry that I now own this. I bought this thinking that it would be my best bet to read some of the harder-to-find Poirot stories because it says that it has his entire casebook. Well, yes and no. And this will only be an issue for people like myself who are t......more

Though I have Murder in the Mews, the mass market paperback which contains the title story, and three other great Poirot short stories by Agatha Christie, when I ran across this one some long while ago in Mogo on vacation, I had to have it. The introduction, called Enter Poirot, is by Christie herse......more

So, who is Hercule Poirot? Agatha Christie fans will appreciate her imaginative powers of creation in this particular character – a refugee from the German invasion of Belgium that brought Britain into WWI. She gave him such a rich history. He became a ranking policeman in the city of Brussels, befo......more
