Synopsis

Every so often a character so captures the hearts and imaginations of readers that he seems to take on a life of his own long after the final page is turned. For such a character, one book is not enough—readers must know what happens next. Now Dean Koontz returns with the novel his fans have been demanding. With the emotional power and sheer storytelling artistry that are his trademarks, Koontz takes up once more the story of a unique young hero and an eccentric little town in a tale that is equal parts suspense and terror, adventure and mystery—and altogether irresistibly odd.

We’re all a little odd beneath the surface. He’s the most unlikely hero you’ll ever meet—an ordinary guy with a modest job you might never look at twice. But there’s so much more to any of us than meets the eye—and that goes triple for Odd Thomas. For Odd lives always between two worlds in the small desert town of Pico Mundo, where the heroic and the harrowing are everyday events. Odd never asked to communicate with the dead—it’s something that just happened. But as the unofficial goodwill ambassador between our world and theirs, he’s got a duty to do the right thing. That’s the way Odd sees it and that’s why he’s won hearts on both sides of the divide between life and death.

A childhood friend of Odd’s has disappeared. The worst is feared. But as Odd applies his unique talents to the task of finding the missing person, he discovers something worse than a dead body, encounters an enemy of exceptional cunning, and spirals into a vortex of terror. Once again Odd will stand against our worst fears. Around him will gather new allies and old, some living and some not. For in the battle to come, there can be no innocent bystanders, and every sacrifice can tip the balance between despair and hope. Whether you’re meeting Odd Thomas for the first time or he’s already an old friend, you’ll be led on an unforgettable journey through a world of terror, wonder and delight—to a revelation that can change your life. And you can have no better guide than Odd Thomas.

Odd Thomas is a difficult character for a reader, but David Aaron Baker portrays him perfectly. The character is difficult because you have to accept that there is this brilliantly insightful young man with the extraordinary vocabulary of a PhD, who is happy being a short order cook or who might move on to selling tires. In this second Odd Thomas story, Koontz doesn't waste any time building a life around our hero, he just jumps right into the crime situation that takes up the rest of the book. As a result it has none of the emotional appeal of the first story. The bad guy is such an unbelievable psychopath that the outcome can never be in doubt, so there is also far less suspense. I enjoyed this audiobook for Baker's pitch-perfect reading more than for the story itself.

This book was absolutely one of Koontz's best! As always, Odd is incredibly amusing and endearing. I my opinion, it was far better than the first. A must read!

I have seen a lot of negative reviews for this book, and after reading it, I can see where people might feel that way. However, I thought it was very enjoyable. Sure it was weird and outlandish - with bizarre characters and haphazard dialogue, but I found it very entertaining. The plot is basic good......more

2010 reviewA re-read of the second book, in what I found was an innovative and compelling concept, continuing the adventures of Odd Thomas, who is trying to come to terms with the loss he suffered in the first book, when he finds himself involved with a brutal kidnapping of one of his closest friend......more

I’m getting well into Odd Thomas. He’s a cute character that sees dead people and while it’s probably more a YA series of books I am enjoying it. Especially loving the Elvis side story. Looking forward to seeing what Odd and Elvis get up too next. Four stars.......more

Odd continues to be possessed by a middle-aged man AKA Dean Koontz, which is unfortunate more for the reader because you end up having to reread a formulaic almost puritan nature of a 20 year old kid. This story could have been so much better. Ok, all jokes aside. This story had its exciting moments......more

The title kind of suits this book because well, the main character's name is Odd, the story is also odd and even the genre is odd. You couldn't tell if it's horror or comedy. So, in short, Forever Odd is one odd book. Is it odd that I enjoyed reading this? :)......more
