Based on a popular series of candid interviews conducted for New York magazine’s human science vertical—"What It's Like"—Finding Normal traverses the country exploring the ways that real people are using the Internet to find community, forge connections, and create identity in ways that bypass accepted sexual norms. Ranging from the curious to the truly shocking, the chapters represent a spectrum of experiences, each introducing the listener to a main character who is grappling with a unique set of concerns relating to sexuality.

Finding Normal at once celebrates the power of our current media moment for rewriting what’s normal and offers a warning about the danger of that seemingly limitless freedom to find yourself. It also shows us that normal has its limits; there are some things that will never be normal. By taking stock of both the gains and limits of the new normality enabled by the last 30 years of media change, Finding Normal shows the way that we are all involved in deciding daily what’s normal.
