Synopsis

Mars is no longer a novelty in Fee of the Frontier. It is a place with bars, back alleys, gambling rooms, and people who have already learned what it means to be stranded far from Earth. In the artificial warmth of a dome, a veteran spacer watches younger men preparing to leave everything familiar behind. They are eager, restless, and convinced they are ready for what comes next. Mars has taught him otherwise. As drinks are poured and fortunes briefly change hands, the night becomes a quiet test of judgment. A single missed departure could rewrite a life, and a single well-meaning intervention could do more harm than good. The story tightens around small choices that carry enormous weight, where romance, money, and power all compete with the pull of deep space. No one is asked directly what they are willing to lose, but the question hangs over every conversation.Fee of the Frontier is reflective without being sentimental, grounded without losing its sense of wonder. It captures the uneasy moment before humanity pushes outward again, when the price is known but the bill has not yet come due.H. B. Fyfe wrote science fiction that treated space as a workplace as much as a dream. His characters are technicians, pilots, stewards, and survivors who understand that progress is built from ordinary nights and uncomfortable decisions. In this story, Fyfe delivers one of his most measured and human examinations of what it costs to leave home when there may be no return.
