About Cardinal John Henry Newman
Cardinal John Henry Newman (1801–1890) was a vicar of Oxford University’s church and a leader in the Oxford movement. Originally an evangelical Oxford academic and priest in the Church of England, he left the church in 1845 and was received into the Roman Catholic Church, eventually being granted the rank of cardinal by Pope Leo XIII. Newman was instrumental in the founding of the Catholic University of Ireland, which evolved into University College, Dublin. He was also a literary figure of note; his major writings include his autobiography, Apologia Pro Vita Sua, the Grammar of Assent, and the poem The Dream of Gerontius.
